FAQs
Can we book a stay during the winter season?
YES! While not all of our sites can tolerate a South Dakota winter, several can. The Longhorn and Grey Wolf Outposts along with all of our Geodesic Domes are able to withstand all weather conditions. Even our bathhouse is updated to run all year long!
The seasons aren’t meant to be feared or avoided. The winter is a perfect time to connect inward - to relax on a comfortable bed in a warm outpost or dome, drinking some coffee or tea while snow gently falls on the pines above the granite crest across the meadow! Snuggle up with a good book or your partner. It’s a great time to slow down and rest on a level you’ve been searching for.
Am I able to bring my dog along?
Absolutely! They are family too. Out of respect for other guests, please plan to pick up any waste and make sure you have a leash.
Is four-wheel drive required to reach True North Retreat?
The road is maintained through all seasons and does not call for four-wheel drive. There is 1.7 miles of gravel road from Hwy 385.
What is a cistern water system?
A cistern is basically a large tank that stores water. Potable water is purchased through a supplier in Custer and delivered to the property. Pumps fill up the tank and allow for the shower haus to be supplied with water.
However, we are currently in the process of digging a well. The cistern will be retained to ensure adaquate water pressure during high demand times.
We also provide water Culligan in ceramic water dispensers in each of the “dry” outposts and tent.
Tent sites are able to use the bathhouse and will have potable water available via several frost-free water faucets throughout the property.
What outdoor amenities are available at the property?
Each Outpost, the Canvas Tent, Geodesic Domes, and tent sites have their own private fire ring.
Adirondack chairs are provided for guests to enjoy at each Outpost, the Canvas Tent, and the Geodesic Domes. Games, puzzles, books, etc. are also provided inside the structures.
The property has almost five acres of private land On the east and west sides of the acreage, you’ll find the Black Hills National Forest boundary line. The Park Service allows for hikers to walk freely into the Forest and create their own adventure. You’ll find an immense amount of Ponderosa pines, mossy rocks, and even some Geocaching.
We are in the process of improving access with gates. Please be careful while passing through the fences on your way to explore!
We are also in the process of providing a larger fire ring for larger groups to gather and connect.
There will be outside games for everyone to use and enjoy. Please be mindful of others’ spaces and keep the games in your space or in the meadow community area.
